Why Shopping Feels Harder Than Ever

Your Pinterest board looks great, but your closet feels like a mess and why does shopping feel harder now than it did 10 years ago? (It’s not just you.)

I’m sharing a (I think) very relatable topic for todays shopper. We have more access to new outfits than ever, yet it is harder than ever to actually look put together, or should I say put a look together.

Defining your personal style, and even just keeping your wardrobe refreshed seems to get more difficult with every passing season. Have you ever stopped to ask yourself why? Despite having the world at our fingertips, most are struggling more than ever to feel confident in what they wear.

I’m breaking down the three major reasons you’re stuck in a cycle of “wrong” purchases and why your personal style feels so out of reach.

1. The Disconnect of Online Shopping

The shift to digital shopping changed everything. We browse a website, pick something appealing, and hit “buy” without any real sense of the fabric or fit. While reviews provide some direction, they are rarely a perfect science.

How many times have you ordered your usual size only for it to arrive massive or uncomfortably tight? This leads to a cycle of impulse overconsumption. Often, we don’t even have the energy to package those mistakes back up for return, so they just sit in our closets, taking up space and creating mental clutter.

2. The Death of Customer Service

Remember when you could walk into a store and find a seasoned professional to help you? Those days are largely gone. Today, stores are understaffed, and the employees who are there often aren’t trained on how their products actually fit. Since sizing is no longer consistent, where a “Small” in one brand fits like a “Large” in another, being left on your own in the fitting room usually leads to frustration rather than a finished look.

3. The “Influencer” Rabbit Hole

Social media has turned everyone into a style guru. We see an influencer looking effortless and think, “I love her style; I’m going to buy that exact outfit.” But we forget to ask: Does that style suit my body shape or my actual lifestyle? Lately, I’ve seen a trend of people claiming you don’t need a “capsule wardrobe,” you just need “pieces you love.” Here’s the truth: You cannot create a functional wardrobe out of random items you love. You need a formula. Even the most accurate color analysis won’t help you if you don’t know how to build an outfit from a baseline of cohesive pieces.

Even with the rise of AI tools promising to find your “perfect” fit, the results are only as good as the data and as we know, online descriptions rarely match reality.

It’s time to move from “lost and overconsumed” to “elevated and effortless,” you have to return to the basics. By building a functional, interchangeable foundation, refreshed each season with a few seasonal trends and then you can finally wake up, get dressed without stress, and feel truly like yourself. Working with a personal stylist can alleviate these challenges, at Mabelle Style we curate a personal style just for you.
