How To Master Your Style This Fall
Fall fashion is a favorite of mine, I love styling the deep rich colours, cozy sweaters and layering for this time of year. I often speak about what I’m wearing for the upcoming season, I share some trends I’m adding into my capsule wardrobe to keep my style fresh and up to date. This time around, I want to go back to the basics, shift gears a little bit and talk more about how you can actually get your wardrobe to work for your personal style and lifestyle heading into this Fall.
Forget about the trends, the TikToks & the AI generated fashion, start with looking at what’s in your actual closet right now. Do you currently think, I wish I loved and wore everything in my wardrobe? Or how can I reset my style, I currently look at my wardrobe and think I have nothing to wear, I have no outfits! If so, I’m sharing the top 5 tips to start you on the path to a functional, feeling great, styling wardrobe for this Fall.
- The Closet Clean-Out
Your closet should be a space filled with interchangeable outfits you love and wear. You naturally pull out items you visually see in your closet and feel good in when you have them on. The remainder tends to sit and collect dust.
Take a step back, look at your wardrobe, and begin editing through everything by category. Create a donation or consignment pile for those pieces form another time in your life, that no longer fit or are worn out. This will allow you to create space and have a better understanding of what you’re keeping and why.
Now, you have the room you need to introduce pieces to your wardrobe that suit you and your personal style for today!
2. What Is Your Shape?
Having an understanding of your body shape gives you a clearer vision of the fits you actually want to wear and feel good in. You learn which areas to enhance, which to play down, and how to use styling tips to elevate, like creating the illusion of broader shoulders or creating a defined waist, fit and styling can bring balance to your shape.
When I work with clients, our focus goes far beyond simply naming a shape. We dive into the specific details that tie a look together, focusing on rise and hem of a pant, the placement of a tuck, or the cut of a blazer to name just a few examples.
The number one response from clients once they understand how to style for their shape? Confidence, every single day they get dressed.
3. Not Every Trend Is For Everyone
We are bombarded with an over-consumption of style inspiration from Instagram & TikTok. The endless stream of content often leaves us confused about what actually works for our lifestyle and shape, while the images on repeat can trigger impulse shopping and bad purchases that sit unworn and fill up space in our closets.
When I introduce trends to clients, I always make one thing clear, not every trend is for everyone.
However, there is a smart way to incorporate seasonal trends to keep your look fresh and up to date. This might be trying a new cut of denim that complements your shape, or adding a fun pop of colour through accessories like shoes or a handbag. But before you shop trends, you must first build a capsule wardrobe of foundation pieces. Without the basics, you simply won’t be able to create the interchangeable outfits needed to make specific trendy items work for you season after season.
4. Shop With Intention
Each season, I practice what I preach and do a thorough wardrobe edit, follow the above 1st step. By following those steps above, sorting everything by category and identifying what pieces need a refresh versus which trends are actually worth incorporating. I create a personal shopping list for myself (which I do for my clients every season, too!). This simple habit ensures I shop with clear intention rather than making impulsive, purchases.
To give you an idea, here is what my personal shopping list looks like after my latest closet edit:
-
An updated black blazer: A staple refresh for my capsule.
-
A soft, unstructured handbag: A nod to current handbag trends with a relaxed feel.
-
Classic straight-leg denim: A great balance to the wide-leg and barrel styles currently in my closet.
-
A few fresh tops: Tops were the category that needed the most love when I stepped back and assessed my wardrobe.
While my list is admittedly a bit longer than this, let’s be honest, I’m a stylist and I love to shop! It is tightly edited, saved right in my phone, and designed to keep me focused and shopping with intention for this upcoming season.
5. Interchangeable Outfits
Do you have a closet full of clothes, or do you actually have outfits?
For years, I’ve told clients that you don’t need a massive wardrobe in fact, too many options only lead to decision fatigue. The secret to effortless style is interchangeability, meaning building outfits that work together seamlessly.
You also don’t need to overcomplicate your looks. Often, the simplest outfits are the chicest. When your wardrobe is cohesive rather than a random assortment of pieces, getting dressed becomes effortless, intentional and stress-free.
